P’urepecha
For more than 50 years, the P’urhépecha people from Cheran, in Michoacan, Mexico have traveled to the same Southern Illinois communities of Cobden and Alto Pass to pick fruits and vegetables in the fields and orchards of Union County. Over the years, the two cultures, Anglo and Hispanic, have merged, with many of the migrant workers buying homes and opening businesses in the communities. In the summer of 2010, the first P’urhépecha Cultural Festival was held in Cobden, IL, showcasing the rich traditions of the P’urepecha people of Cheran, in Michoacan, Mexico.
